Best Air Purifier for Bedroom in India: How to Size and Choose One

Published 19 October 2026

The best air purifier for a bedroom is one with enough CADR to give the room about five air changes an hour, a Sleep mode quiet enough for you, a display you can dim, and no ozone-producing ioniser. For a typical 12 × 12 ft bedroom with a 3 m ceiling, that means roughly 200 m³/h of CADR. Choose a little more than you need so it can run at a lower, quieter speed all night.

The Short Answer

A bedroom is where most people spend the longest unbroken stretch of time indoors, often seven or eight hours with the door shut. That makes it the first room to equip. Why sleep and bedroom air matter is covered in our bedroom air quality and sleep guide; this one is about buying the right machine. Four checks decide it, in order: CADR for the room, night-time noise, how dark it can go, and whether it is safe to run next to a sleeping child or adult.

Sizing: 10×10, 12×12 and 14×14 ft Bedrooms

The formula is the same for every room:

CADR (m³/h) = floor area (m²) × ceiling height (m) × air changes per hour. 1 sq ft = 0.0929 m². We use a 3 m ceiling and five air changes an hour, a good target for Indian winters.

BedroomAreaVolume (3 m ceiling)CADR for 4 ACHCADR for 5 ACH
10 × 10 ft (100 sq ft)9.3 m²27.9 m³111 m³/h139 m³/h
12 × 12 ft (144 sq ft)13.4 m²40.1 m³161 m³/h201 m³/h
14 × 14 ft (196 sq ft)18.2 m²54.6 m³218 m³/h273 m³/h

Worked through for the middle row: 144 × 0.0929 = 13.4 m²; × 3 m = 40.1 m³; × 5 = about 201 m³/h. If your ceiling is lower, say 2.7 m, the numbers fall in proportion. If an attached dressing area or open bathroom door adds volume, include it.

Why buy more than the minimum? CADR is measured at the highest fan speed, and at night you will want a lower one. A purifier with headroom can run on its quiet setting and still deliver the air changes the room needs. That is the single best answer to “will it keep me awake?”. For a small room such as a 10 × 10 ft study, a compact unit is enough; for larger rooms, our air purifier size guide goes further.

Sleep-Mode Noise for Light Sleepers

Noise decides whether a bedroom purifier stays on through the night or gets switched off at 2 a.m. What to check:

  • The stated dB figure at the lowest speed or in Sleep mode. Compare models on that number, not on the maximum-speed figure. Be cautious with listings that give no figure at all.
  • The character of the sound. A steady low hum is easier to sleep through than a fan that keeps ramping up and down. A Sleep mode that holds a quiet speed helps light sleepers.
  • Beeps and clicks. Button tones and alert chimes are irritating at night; check whether they can be silenced.
  • Return policy. Sensitivity to sound is personal. A trial or money-back period lets you test it in your own room.

Display Dimming and Night Lights

Bright LEDs and screens can disturb sleep. Look for a display that dims or switches off in Sleep mode, and a colour ring or indicator that can be turned off. A numeric PM2.5 readout is valuable by day, so you can see the room clean up, but at night you want darkness. Scheduling helps: set the purifier to enter Sleep mode at bedtime and return to Auto in the morning.

No Ozone, Child Lock and Other Bedroom Checks

  • No ozone. Some ionisers and plasma features produce ozone, a lung irritant. A purifier that sits a metre from your pillow should not add one. Choose HEPA and activated carbon, and if there is an ioniser, make sure it can be switched off. See the HEPA vs ioniser vs UV comparison for detail.
  • Child lock. Small children love buttons. A child lock stops midnight speed changes, and a stable base matters if toddlers pull themselves up on furniture.
  • Timer and schedule. Useful if you want it to run hard before bed and quietly after.
  • Filters you can buy. A bedroom purifier runs for many hours a day, so check the replacement filter is listed and in stock. Filters are the larger part of the running cost.

Where to Put It in the Bedroom

Place the purifier near the bed, within a couple of metres, so the air you breathe is the air being cleaned. Keep it off the wall with clear space around the intakes, away from curtains, and on the floor or a low, stable surface. Do not point the outlet straight at your face: a constant breeze can dry your eyes and throat. Close the door and windows while it runs, and ventilate in the morning when the outdoor air allows. For AC and ceiling-fan placement, see where to place an air purifier in an Indian home.

If anyone wakes with wheezing, breathlessness or a cough that does not settle, see a doctor. A purifier lowers exposure to particles; it does not treat a condition.

Where Boon Airvana Fits

Boon Airvana has a CADR of 380 m³/h. Against the table above, that works out to about 13.6 air changes an hour in a 10 × 10 ft room, more than nine in a 12 × 12 ft room and about 7 in a 14 × 14 ft room, all at a 3 m ceiling. That headroom is what lets it run on a lower setting at night.

  • Sleep mode runs it quietly for the night; we do not publish a dB figure here, so check the current listing and use the 10-day money-back guarantee to test it in your own room.
  • Watch faces on the full-colour display include an AQI-only view; app scheduling can switch modes at bedtime.
  • H13 HEPA, activated carbon, a washable pre-filter and an anti-bacterial coating on the filter; no ioniser is listed among its stages.
  • Child lock on the unit and in the Boon app, plus a timer and four fan speeds.

When it is more than you need: a single small 10 × 10 ft room needs only about 140 m³/h, and a compact HEPA unit with a stated CADR will do that job. Airvana is ₹14,900 at the time of writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best air purifier for a bedroom?

The best one for your bedroom is the one whose CADR gives the room about five air changes an hour, with a quiet Sleep mode, a dimmable display, no ozone-producing ioniser and filters you can buy. For a 12 by 12 ft bedroom with a 3 m ceiling, that means roughly 200 m³/h of CADR. Extra headroom lets it run quieter.

What CADR do I need for a 12×12 bedroom?

A 12 by 12 ft room is 144 sq ft, or about 13.4 square metres. With a 3 m ceiling it holds about 40 cubic metres of air. For five air changes an hour, you need about 201 m³/h of CADR; for four, about 161 m³/h. A lower ceiling reduces the figure in proportion.

Is it safe to sleep with an air purifier on?

Yes, for a HEPA and activated carbon purifier. Avoid models with an always-on ioniser or plasma feature that can produce ozone. Place it near the bed but not blowing directly on your face, keep the room closed while it runs, and ventilate in the morning when the outdoor air allows.

How quiet should a bedroom air purifier be for a light sleeper?

Compare the stated noise figure in dB at the lowest speed or in Sleep mode, not at maximum. A steady low hum is easier to sleep through than a fan that keeps changing speed. Choose a unit with more CADR than the room needs so it can stay on a quiet setting, and use a return period to test it.

What is the best air purifier for a small room?

For a small room such as a 10 by 10 ft bedroom or study with a 3 m ceiling, about 140 m³/h of CADR gives five air changes an hour. A compact HEPA purifier with a stated CADR in that range is enough. Make sure it has a true HEPA filter, a sealed housing and a quiet low speed.

Where should I place an air purifier in my bedroom?

Place it within a couple of metres of the bed, off the wall, with clear space around its intakes and away from curtains. Keep the outlet from blowing straight at your face, which can dry your eyes and throat. Keep it out of the direct blast of the AC and keep doors and windows closed while it runs.

Boon Airvana gives a 12 × 12 ft bedroom more than nine air changes an hour, with Sleep mode and child lock. ₹14,900 at the time of writing.
