A modular kitchen is designed and manufactured as a system, then installed. Once the carcasses
are in and the counter is on, changing anything means cutting into finished work.
Every appliance needs some combination of power, water in, water out, and
ventilation. Each of those is a five-minute conversation at the design stage and a
disruptive job afterwards.
The rule: decide every appliance — including the ones that live inside
cabinets — before the design is signed off. Not the models; the fact that they exist and what
each one needs.
Power Points — The Most Common Regret
Nearly every kitchen ends up short of sockets, because planning counts visible appliances and
forgets concealed ones.
Inside cabinets: water purifier, dishwasher, waste disposer, sometimes a
booster pump.
Above the counter: mixer, kettle, toaster, microwave, air fryer — and two or
three spare, because appliance counts only ever grow.
Dedicated: refrigerator, chimney, oven.
Sockets are inexpensive during a build. Adding one to a finished kitchen means chasing walls
or running visible trunking through a kitchen designed to look seamless.
Plumbing and Drainage
Three appliances need water and drainage, and each has to be decided before the cabinetry is
manufactured:
Sink — obvious, and its position determines much of the rest
Dishwasher — inlet and drain, plus a cabinet sized for it. Even if you are
not buying one now, leaving provision is nearly free
Water purifier — inlet, drain for the RO reject line, and power. Covered
below
The reject line matters and is often improvised. RO produces reject water continuously while
running, and it needs plumbing properly into the waste. A hose tucked into the cabinet is how
people end up with a swollen, mouldy cupboard base a year later.
Chimney Ducting
Given how Indian cooking works, the chimney is arguably the most consequential appliance in
the kitchen — high-heat oil generates a great deal of fine particulate, and extraction at source
is what keeps it out of the rest of the home.
Plan for:
Ducted, not ductless, wherever the layout allows. Ductless filters and
returns the air to the same room
The shortest, straightest duct run possible. Every bend costs
extraction
A hood at least as wide as the hob. A narrower hood cannot capture the
outer burners
The correct mounting height — too high and the plume disperses before
capture
Duct routing has to be agreed with the designer before the false ceiling and upper cabinets
are built. Afterwards, the options are all bad.
The Purifier Nobody Plans For
This is the appliance most consistently left out of modular kitchen planning, and it is the
one where planning saves the most.
A wall-mounted purifier needs a stretch of wall — in a kitchen designed around continuous
cabinetry, there frequently isn’t one, and the machine ends up in an awkward corner or on the
only clear wall the design was built around.
An under-sink purifier solves that by living in the cabinet, with only a
slim tap on the counter. But it needs four things decided in advance:
Clear cabinet volume — genuinely clear, not the space that exists once you
remove the bin and the pipes
A power point inside or immediately beside that cabinet
Inlet and drain connections
A hole in the counter for the dispensing tap — drilled by the fabricator
when the counter is cut, which is free, rather than by someone drilling granite in your
finished kitchen, which is not
The one thing to tell your kitchen designer
“I want an under-sink water purifier — leave the cabinet clear, add a power point
inside it, and have the fabricator cut a tap hole in the counter.” Say it before the
counter is cut. That sentence saves the most money of anything on this page.

Not everything is lost — some things retrofit better than others.
Under-sink purifier: possible. The counter hole is the main cost, and a
power point may need running. Both are routine jobs, just more expensive than they would have

Dishwasher: hard without a cabinet sized for it. Freestanding models are
the usual compromise.
Chimney ducting: the hardest to retrofit well, and the one most worth
getting right at design stage.

Where should the water purifier go in a modular kitchen?
Under the sink is the usual answer in a modular kitchen, because it keeps the machine out of sight and off the wall. Can I add an under-sink water purifier after the kitchen is finished?

How many power points does a modular kitchen need?

Should the chimney be ducted or ductless in a modular kitchen?
Ducted, wherever the layout allows. A ducted chimney removes cooking emissions from the building; a ductless one filters and returns them, leaving heat, humidity and a share of the particulate in the kitchen. Ducting has to be planned into the design, which is exactly why it is on this list.
Moving is the one moment when everything about a home is accessible and nothing is in the
way. Walls are bare, the kitchen is empty, plumbing is reachable, and no one has settled into
tolerating anything yet.
Two categories of work are dramatically cheaper now than later:
Anything requiring plumbing — softener on the main line, under-sink
purifier, a counter hole for a tap
Anything requiring access — sealing window frames, inspecting behind where
furniture will go, cleaning the tank
The one-line version: find out what the water is and what the air is doing before the furniture arrives. Both get considerably more expensive to address
afterwards.
Before You Move In
Water
Establish the source. Municipal, borewell, tanker, or a combination? This
single answer determines everything else. Borewell means testing rather than assuming.
Look inside the tank. Most people never do. Sediment, biofilm, a missing
or broken cover — all common, all fixable, all much easier before you move in.
Have the tank cleaned. Whatever the previous occupants did or did not do
is now your problem.
Check your area’s data. TDS, hardness and contaminant readings for your
location tell you what specification you actually need before you spend anything.
Test if it is borewell. Arsenic, fluoride and nitrate are invisible and
tasteless. This is the case where a laboratory test is genuinely warranted.
Air
Ventilate hard if it has been painted or refurnished. VOC off-gassing is
at its highest when everything is new, and an empty home can be aired far more aggressively
than an occupied one.
Look for damp. Check external walls, behind where furniture will go,
inside cupboards, around window reveals. A musty smell counts even with nothing visible — and
it is easier to negotiate about before you have moved in.
Weather-strip windows and doors. Trivially easy in an empty home, and it
is the highest-return air quality intervention there is.
Check the kitchen chimney — whether one exists, whether it is ducted, and
whether its filters have ever been cleaned.
The First Week
Flush every tap for several minutes. Water standing in pipes picks up
whatever the pipes have to offer.
Run the geyser and check the hot water for colour and smell. Discoloured
hot water alone points at the tank.
Watch the supply pattern. Continuous or intermittent? Intermittent supply
changes what you need for storage and raises the contamination risk in the mains.
Check pressure. RO systems need adequate inlet pressure; low pressure may
mean a booster pump.
Note the first-breath impression each time you return for the first few
days, before you acclimatise. It is the most honest air assessment you will get.
Find the stopcock and the main switch. Not glamorous, and you will want to
know where they are before you need them urgently.
If You’re Renting
Different constraints — you cannot drill the counter or plumb a softener — but some things
are worth establishing before signing.
Ask what the supply is and whether it is continuous
Ask when the tank was last cleaned, and whose responsibility it is
Run the taps during the viewing. Pressure, colour, smell
Look for water staining on ceilings and walls — evidence of leaks nobody
will mention
Check for damp behind furniture and inside cupboards
Confirm what you are allowed to fit. Wall-mounted purifiers and
weather-stripping are usually fine; anything requiring drilling a counter usually is not

What Can Wait
Moving generates pressure to buy everything at once. Some of it genuinely should wait.
An air purifier, until you know the home. Which rooms you use, whether
dust arrives from outside or is generated inside, whether there is a damp problem to fix
instead. Buying before you know means buying the wrong size for the wrong room.
A purifier bought before testing the water — you may need less than you
think, or something different.
Anything sold on urgency during a move. This is a well-known moment for
upselling, and a fortnight’s delay costs nothing.
One exception: if there is a newborn or a young child in the household, do the paint
and furniture off-gassing before occupying, and prepare their room first. That is the
one thing that genuinely cannot be caught up on later.

The Bureau of Indian Standards is India’s national standards body. It
publishes standards, and it operates certification schemes under which a manufacturer can be
licensed to mark a product as conforming to one.
The distinction that matters commercially is between two very different statements:
“Certified to IS 16240” — the manufacturer holds a licence, the product
has been tested against the standard, and the licence can be verified.
“Conforms to Indian standards” or “meets BIS norms” — a claim, made by the
seller, with nothing behind it that you can check.
The second phrasing is common and legally vague. It is worth reading marketing copy carefully
for which of the two is actually being said.
The practical test: a genuine certification has a licence number. Ask for
it. A brand that cannot produce one is not certified, whatever the packaging implies.
The Standards That Apply
Different purification technologies fall under different standards. The one most buyers
encounter is IS 16240, covering household reverse osmosis based water
purifiers.
Broadly, such a standard sets requirements across:
Construction and materials — including that materials in contact with
drinking water are suitable for the purpose
Performance — what the system must actually achieve
Electrical safety
Marking and information — what must be disclosed to the buyer
UV-based systems fall under a separate standard, and a purifier combining technologies may
engage more than one. This is worth knowing because a brand may hold certification for one
product or one technology and market the credential across a range.
Why This Is Changing
The regulatory direction has been toward mandatory certification for water
purifiers, replacing a largely voluntary regime.
An honest caveat: the timelines have been revised more than once, and the effective dates have
moved. Rather than state a date that may already be wrong, the sensible course is to check the current position with BIS directly — the status genuinely has shifted
and articles on this subject go stale quickly.
The direction of travel, though, is clear and worth understanding as a buyer. A mandatory
regime removes the least accountable end of the market — the unbranded and grey-market units
sold with no verifiable claims at all — which is where the real risk sits.

That last row on the right deserves emphasis. Certification describes a product as
manufactured. It says nothing about a purifier whose filters were last changed two years ago —
and filter neglect, not certification status, is the most common reason purifiers fail to deliver
in Indian homes.
How to Check a Claim
Ask for the licence number. A specific number, for a specific product.
Verify it on the BIS portal. Licences can be searched — verification takes
a couple of minutes.
Check what the licence covers. A brand may be certified for one model and
imply it across a range.
Read the wording precisely. “Certified to IS 16240” is a claim with
something behind it. “Conforms to BIS norms” is not.
Look at the packaging and the product, not only the listing. Online
listings are frequently written by sellers rather than manufacturers.
Why It Matters More Than It Used To
Two reasons the credential is worth more now than it was.
The market has a long tail. Alongside established brands there is a large
volume of unbranded and lightly branded units sold online and through local dealers, with
performance claims nobody verifies. Certification is one of the few objective ways to separate a
manufacturer accountable to a scheme from one accountable to nothing.
Materials matter and are invisible. A purifier is a set of plastics, membranes
and adhesives in continuous contact with water you drink daily. The requirement that those
materials are appropriate for potable use is not something a buyer can assess by looking.
None of this makes certification a substitute for choosing the right specification for your
water. It is a floor, not a recommendation — but a floor is worth having, and it is one of the
few checkable things in a category full of unverifiable claims.
Certification is the floor. The right specification depends on your water — check what your area’s supply actually contains.
One that has been certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards as conforming to the relevant Indian Standard for its technology — most commonly IS 16240 for household RO purifiers. Certification means the product was tested against defined requirements rather than simply claimed to meet them.
What is IS 16240?
The Indian Standard covering household reverse osmosis based water purifiers. It sets out requirements including construction, materials in contact with water, performance and safety. Other standards cover other technologies — for example UV-based systems fall under a different standard.
Is BIS certification mandatory for water purifiers in India?
The regulatory position has been moving toward mandatory certification for water purifiers, with timelines that have been revised more than once. Because the status and dates have shifted, check the current position with BIS rather than relying on any article — including this one — for the effective date.
How do I check if a water purifier is really BIS certified?
Ask for the licence number and verify it on the BIS portal, which allows you to search licences. A genuine certification has a specific licence covering a specific product. A brand that will not supply the number, or that offers only a general assurance of compliance, has told you something.
Does BIS certification mean the water will be safe?

Air purifiers are compared on purchase price, which is the smaller and less interesting
number. Over three years, ownership is dominated by consumables — and the gap between two units
at the same sticker price can be substantial.
There are only two ongoing costs:
Filter replacement — the main one, and the one that varies enormously
between brands
Electricity — real but modest, and usually smaller than people expect
The number to compare across brands: purchase price plus three years of
filters. Not the sticker. Two units at the same price can differ by a large multiple once
consumables are counted.
Filters — The Real Cost
A HEPA filter is consumed as it works. Particles accumulate in the fibre matrix; efficiency
holds up reasonably well but airflow falls, and falling airflow means falling
clean-air delivery. A saturated filter is a slow strangulation of the machine.
Three things drive how fast that happens:
Local air quality. The dominant factor. A Delhi winter loads a filter far
faster than a Bangalore one.
Runtime. Continuous operation through a season consumes a filter quickly.
Whether there is a pre-filter, and whether you wash it. A washable
pre-filter catching hair and coarse dust materially extends the life of the expensive HEPA
behind it.
Manufacturers typically rate HEPA filters for six to twelve months. Read that as a figure for
“normal” conditions — in a genuine pollution season, expect the shorter end or less.
The carbon stage separately
If the unit has activated carbon for odours and VOCs, that saturates on its own schedule and
usually faster. A thin carbon-impregnated sheet can be inert within a few months while the HEPA
behind it is still fine. Some units combine both into one cartridge, which simplifies
replacement and means you replace the more expensive element on the schedule of the cheaper
one.
Electricity — Smaller Than You’d Think
Most domestic purifiers draw somewhere between 20W and 60W on the settings
people actually use — comparable to a ceiling fan, and an order of magnitude below an air
conditioner.
Running one continuously through a season costs a modest amount per month at typical Indian
tariffs. Two things push it higher: running a large unit at maximum speed continuously, and
units with additional features such as heating, humidification or a display running constantly.
The practical point: electricity should not be a reason to switch a purifier off.
Intermittent running is a false economy, because a room takes time to clear and switching off
lets it refill.

That last line deserves attention. A proprietary filter for a model that has been discontinued
can become expensive or simply unavailable, at which point the purifier is finished regardless of
its condition. Before buying an unfamiliar brand, check that replacement filters are actually
stocked in India rather than nominally listed.
When a Filter Is Actually Finished
Filter indicator lights are frequently timers rather than sensors — they count hours and
illuminate on schedule, whether the filter is clean or destroyed. Better ways to judge:
Clearing time. With a monitor, note how long a closed room takes to fall
from a given level when you first buy the unit. Repeat every couple of months. When it takes
noticeably longer, the filter is done.
Airflow at the outlet. A clearly weaker stream at the same fan setting is
a loaded filter.
Look at it. Uniformly grey where it was white is straightforward
evidence.
Smell. A musty smell from the outlet suggests the filter is holding
moisture and organic material and should be changed regardless of age.
One thing not to do: washing a HEPA filter. It damages the fibre structure
that does the work, and the result looks clean while performing far worse. Pre-filters are
usually washable; HEPA is not.
Reducing the Running Cost
Wash the pre-filter monthly. The single cheapest thing you can do, and it
directly extends HEPA life.
Seal the room. Less infiltration means less load. Weather-stripping pays
for itself in filter life alone.
Buy slightly larger, run slower. More clean air per watt, less noise, and
slower loading than a small unit at maximum.
Do not run it in an active kitchen. Grease aerosol clogs HEPA quickly —
that is the chimney’s job.
Close the door. Filtering one room rather than the flat means the filter
loads at the rate that room dirties.
Buy filters before the season. Availability and price both worsen in
November.
What to Check Before You Buy
The price of every replaceable element, not just the HEPA
Rated life of each, and whether that assumes conditions like yours
Whether filters are stocked in India and by whom
Whether the pre-filter is washable
Wattage at the speed you will genuinely run
Whether the indicator is a sensor or a timer
A brand that answers these readily is telling you something. So is one that does not.
Undersizing is the most common reason air purifiers disappoint. Work out the CADR your room actually needs — the coverage area on the box assumes a lower air-change rate than an Indian winter requires.
How much does it cost to run an air purifier in India?
Filters dominate and electricity is minor. A typical domestic unit draws roughly 20–60W on usable settings, which even running continuously costs a modest amount per month. Filter replacement is the larger figure, and in a polluted city a filter rated for a year can be finished in a single winter.
How often should I change a HEPA filter?
Manufacturers commonly rate them for six to twelve months, but that assumes ‘normal’ conditions. In Delhi-NCR through a bad winter, a filter can saturate far sooner. Judge by behaviour rather than the calendar: if the unit takes noticeably longer to clear a room than it used to, the filter is done regardless of what the indicator says.
Is an air purifier expensive to run on electricity?
No. At 20–60W on typical settings, it is comparable to a ceiling fan and far below an air conditioner. Where electricity does become significant is running a large unit at maximum speed continuously — another argument for buying slightly larger and running it slower.
Can I wash a HEPA filter and reuse it?
No. Washing a true HEPA filter damages the fibre structure that does the filtering, and a washed filter looks fine while performing far worse. Pre-filters are usually washable and should be washed monthly. If a product markets a ‘washable HEPA’, treat that claim with suspicion.
Do cheaper air purifiers cost more to run?
Frequently, yes — some are sold on the printer-cartridge model, where proprietary filters cost more across three years than the machine did. This is why the filter price and its rated life should be checked before the purchase, not after.
Undersizing is the single most common reason people conclude air purifiers do not work. The
unit runs, the filter is genuine, and the room stays polluted — because the machine cannot move
enough of that room’s air per hour to make a difference.
The confusion comes from a number that is technically honest and practically misleading: coverage area. Manufacturers are entitled to calculate it at a modest
air-change rate, so a unit sold for “up to 400 sq ft” may be rated at roughly two air changes an
hour. That is fine for a mild day and inadequate for a severe one.
The rule to carry away: ignore the coverage claim. Work from your room’s
volume and the air changes you actually want, and buy the CADR that produces.
CADR — The Only Number That Matters
Clean Air Delivery Rate is the volume of properly filtered air a unit
delivers per hour, normally quoted in cubic metres per hour (m³/h). Some brands quote cubic feet
per minute (CFM) instead — multiply CFM by about 1.7 to get m³/h.
What makes CADR the right number is that it combines the two things that actually determine
performance: how well the filter cleans and how much air the fan moves
through it. An H14 filter behind an underpowered fan produces a lower CADR than an H13
behind a good one — and protects less room.
A specification sheet that lists five technologies but no CADR figure is describing a product
that would rather you did not compare it.
ACH — How Many Times Per Hour
Air changes per hour is how many times the unit can process the room’s entire volume in an
hour. It converts CADR into something meaningful for your specific room.

Working Out What You Need
Three steps, and the arithmetic is simple enough to do on a phone in a showroom.
Room volume in cubic metres.
Floor area in sq ft × ceiling height in ft ÷ 35.3 (A 12 × 12 ft room with a 10 ft ceiling: 144 × 10 ÷ 35.3 ≈ 41 m³)
Multiply by the air changes you want. 41 m³ × 5 ACH ≈ 205 m³/h
That is your target CADR. Buy at or above it.
Measure your actual ceiling. Indian ceilings are commonly 10 ft but frequently higher in
older construction, and a 12 ft ceiling adds 20% to the volume — enough to move you a model up.

The last row is worth pausing on. Open-plan spaces need CADR figures that few domestic units
reach, and buying one unit for a large open plan is usually a disappointment. Two smaller units
placed apart generally outperform one large one — and give you a fallback when one is being
serviced.
Translating the Box’s Claim
You will rarely find a CADR figure on the front of the packaging; you will always find a
coverage area. Two ways to convert:
Halve it. Treat “up to 400 sq ft” as roughly 200 sq ft of genuine
protection in a polluted winter. Crude, and reliable.
Find the real number. CADR is usually in the technical specifications on
the manufacturer’s website even when it is absent from the box. If you cannot find it anywhere,
that absence is itself information.
