Water Purifier Warranty and Service: What to Read Before You Buy

Published 2 November 2026

A water purifier warranty usually covers manufacturing defects in the machine, sometimes the membrane, and sometimes labour. It almost never covers filters, which are the main cost of ownership. Before you buy, read the exclusions, ask whether independent servicing voids the warranty, and find out the out-of-warranty visit charge, because you will be paying that for most of the machine’s life.

Why this is worth ten minutes

A water purifier is not really a one-off purchase. It is a machine that needs consumables replaced regularly and occasional attention from someone with a spanner, for as long as you own it.

That means the warranty and service arrangements are not fine print. They are a large share of what you are actually buying, and they differ far more between brands than the purification does.

The number nobody asks for: the out-of-warranty visit charge. You will be outside warranty for most of the machine’s life, so that figure describes your real ownership experience better than the warranty length does.

What a warranty usually covers

  • Manufacturing defects in the machine: pump, electronics, housing, solenoid valve
  • The RO membrane, often for a shorter period than the machine itself
  • Labour, sometimes. Confirm this, because a “parts warranty” and a “comprehensive warranty” are different things

Warranty periods in the category commonly run one to two years on the machine, varying by brand and model.

What it usually excludes

This list is longer than most buyers expect:

  • Filters and cartridges. They are consumables and essentially never covered. They are also the main cost of ownership.
  • Damage from input water quality. A membrane fouled by very high TDS, sediment or iron is often excluded as misuse rather than a defect. This matters if your supply is hard on equipment.
  • Damage from voltage fluctuation, unless a stabiliser was used.
  • Unauthorised servicing. Using a local technician for a cheap filter change can void the remaining warranty. Read this clause specifically.
  • Installation faults, if someone other than the brand installed it.
  • Physical damage and cosmetic wear.
  • Consequential damage. A leak that ruins your cabinet is generally your problem.
The clause that catches people

Unauthorised servicing. A filter changed by a local technician for less money can end the warranty on the whole machine. If you intend to use independent service, know what it costs you first.

Employed vs franchised technicians

This structural difference shapes the experience more than brand reputation does, and it is rarely discussed openly.

Employed techniciansFranchised network
AccountabilityDirectly to the brand To the franchisee, who answers to the brand
ConsistencyMore uniform Varies by local operator
Geographic reach NarrowerMuch wider
Incentive at the visit Complete the job Often to sell parts and additional services
Parts usedManufacturer’s Usually manufacturer’s; worth confirming

Neither model is inherently better. Franchising is how brands achieve national coverage, and without it much of India would have no service at all. But it does explain why the same brand can be excellent in one city and poor in another, and why asking neighbours about local service tells you more than reading national reviews.

Should you buy the AMC?

An annual maintenance contract bundles scheduled servicing, some or all filters, and usually a number of visits.

Work it out rather than deciding on principle:

  1. Add up what filters would cost you separately over a year
  2. Add expected service visits at the out-of-warranty rate
  3. Compare the total with the AMC price
  4. Check what the AMC actually includes: all filters or some, membrane or not, unlimited visits or a fixed number

Two honest observations. An AMC that mainly bundles filters at a markup is poor value, because you are pre-paying for consumables at a premium. But an AMC has one genuine and underrated benefit: the filters actually get changed. If you know yourself well enough to know they otherwise would not be, that is worth real money, because a neglected purifier is not purifying. Our full analysis of whether a water purifier AMC plan is worth it runs the numbers.

Before comparing warranties, check what your water actually needs removing. Your TDS decides which machines you should be comparing in the first place.

The questions to ask

Ask these before buying, from any brand, us included:

  • What exactly does the warranty cover, and for how long: the machine, the membrane, labour?
  • What is excluded? Ask for the list, not a summary.
  • Does independent servicing void it?
  • What does each filter cost, and how often does it need replacing?
  • What is the out-of-warranty visit charge?
  • Who services my pincode: employed technicians or a franchise?
  • What is the response-time commitment, and is there any remedy if it is missed?
  • Will filters still be available in five years?

A brand that answers these readily and in writing is telling you something. So is one that deflects to “we have a large national network”. Our list of water purifier brand red flags covers other warning signs.

Making it last

  • Keep the paperwork: invoice, warranty card, installation report. Claims get refused for want of a document.
  • Use a stabiliser if your supply fluctuates. Voltage damage is a common exclusion.
  • Change filters when they are due. It is the cheapest reliability measure there is, and the most commonly skipped. Our RO filter replacement guide explains what each stage does and when it wears out.
  • Log every service visit: the date, what was done and what was replaced. It helps with warranty claims and with spotting a technician replacing the same part repeatedly.
  • Ask what was actually replaced and see the old part. This is not cynicism; it is simply normal in any service relationship where the customer cannot check the work.

How Boon answers these questions

Since we told you to ask every brand, here are our own answers. Boon is a water-technology company founded in 2013 by ex-IIT Kanpur engineers, backed by the Technology Development Board (Govt. of India), NITI Aayog and Roca, with systems running in more than 4,000 organisations.

  • Who installs and services it: Boon’s own team, not a third-party agency. That puts us on the employed side of the table above, with the trade-off that goes with it: check that we cover your pincode before you order.
  • Warranty: Boon Tap and Boon Homie come with a 2-year warranty. The full terms, including what is and is not covered, are on our warranty and maintenance page.
  • Installation: free, by the same team.
  • A way out: a 10-day money-back guarantee on home products.
  • Filter health: WaterAI monitoring shows input TDS, output TDS and filter health, so a filter change is prompted by what the purifier reports rather than a guess.

For filter prices and anything else the warranty page does not answer, ask us before you buy, and ask for the answer in writing. That is the same standard we suggest you hold every brand to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a water purifier warranty actually cover?

Typically manufacturing defects in the machine, such as the pump, electronics and housing, and sometimes the membrane, usually for a shorter period than the machine itself. Filters are consumables and are almost never covered. Labour may or may not be included, and that is worth checking, because visit charges add up.

Are filters covered under water purifier warranty?

Almost never. Filters are consumables: they are used up by the water passing through them, which is not a defect. Any plan that appears to include filters is usually an AMC or subscription with the filter cost built into the fee, rather than a warranty. Check what each filter costs before you buy the machine.

Is a water purifier AMC worth buying?

It depends on what it includes and what filters would cost you separately. Add up the annual filter cost plus expected service visits and compare that with the AMC price. An AMC that mainly bundles filters at a markup is poor value; one that includes unlimited visits and genuine parts cover can be reasonable, especially if you would otherwise neglect maintenance.

What is the difference between employed and franchised service technicians?

An employed technician is on the manufacturer’s payroll, so accountability runs directly to the brand. A franchised network is made up of independent businesses operating under the brand, which gives wider geographic reach but more variable quality, and often an incentive to sell additional parts and services at the visit.

How much do water purifier service visits cost?

It varies by brand, city and whether you are inside the warranty period. The number to establish before buying is the out-of-warranty visit charge, since that is what you will be paying for most of the machine’s life. Ask for it explicitly, in writing, rather than assuming it will be reasonable.
