Where Household Dust Actually Comes From
You cleaned yesterday. There is a visible film on the table today. It is one of the most
quietly demoralising domestic problems there is, and the usual advice — clean more often, buy a
better mop — misdiagnoses it.
Household dust is not one substance. It is a mixture, and the proportions decide what
actually works:
- Outdoor particulate blown in. Road dust, construction dust, combustion
soot. In most Indian cities this is the largest single contributor, and it is the one nobody
is addressing when they clean. - Textile fibres. Bedding, curtains, upholstery and clothes shed
continuously. Bedrooms are dustier than living rooms for this reason. - Skin cells and hair. Human and pet. The classic answer, and a smaller
fraction than folklore suggests. - Cooking residue. Frying aerosolises oil, which settles as a sticky film
that then catches everything else. This is why kitchen dust is greasier and harder to
remove. - Soil tracked in. Shoes carry a remarkable amount of street indoors.
The diagnostic that matters: if your dust is mostly coming from outside,
cleaning is treating a symptom. Sealing and filtering treat the cause — and they are
different jobs.
Why It’s Worse in Indian Homes
Three structural reasons, none of which are about how well anyone keeps house.
Outdoor levels are simply higher
Ambient particulate in most Indian cities is high by global standards, and across the
Indo-Gangetic plain it rises sharply from October as cooler, stiller air traps pollution near
the ground. More particulate outside means more of it finding its way inside — which is why so
many households notice their dust problem “starts” every winter.
Homes are built to breathe
Indian construction has historically favoured natural ventilation — and for heat and
humidity that is sound design. But the same gaps around window frames, door bottoms, exhaust
vents and service ducts that let a home breathe also let particulate in continuously, whether
the windows are open or shut.
Construction is constant
In most Indian cities something is being built or demolished within a few hundred metres of
most homes, most of the time. Construction dust is coarse, abundant, and travels.
Why Cleaning Alone Cannot Win
Two mechanisms work against you, and understanding them changes what you do.
First: the supply is continuous. Dust does not arrive once and wait to be
removed. It arrives constantly. Cleaning resets the level; infiltration immediately begins
rebuilding it. If the inflow is high enough, the interval between “clean” and “visibly dusty”
can genuinely be under a day, no matter how thoroughly you cleaned.
Second: dry cleaning re-suspends more than it removes. A dry cloth, a broom
or a feather duster lifts fine particles back into the air, where they circulate and settle
again over the following hours — frequently on the surface you just wiped. This is why a room
can look worse a few hours after dusting than it did before.
Switch from dry to damp wiping, and from a broom to a vacuum with a sealed
HEPA-grade filter. Both capture particles rather than relaunching them. This one change does
more than doubling your cleaning frequency.
What Actually Reduces Dust
1. Seal the gaps — the highest return, and the least glamorous
If outdoor infiltration is your dominant source, sealing is the intervention with the
largest effect per rupee. Weather-stripping around window frames, brush or rubber seals at door
bottoms, and blocking unused vents will reduce inflow more than any appliance. Start with the
windows facing the road.
2. Filter the air in the rooms you use
A HEPA air purifier removes airborne particulate from the room it is in, which reduces what
settles on surfaces there. Two honest limits: it does nothing for dust already on your
furniture, and it works per room, not per home. It also only works with the room closed —
running one with the window open is filtering the outdoors.
3. Reduce what your home generates
- Shoes off at the door. Unfashionable, extremely effective.
- Wash bedding weekly in hot water. Bedding is a major fibre and dust-mite
reservoir, and the bedroom is where you spend a third of your life. - Use the kitchen chimney every time. Extracting cooking aerosol at source
prevents the sticky film that makes everything else adhere. - Fewer open textile surfaces in the rooms that bother you most — heavy
drapes and thick rugs are both sources and reservoirs.
4. Time your ventilation
Homes still need fresh air. The useful refinement is when: ventilate at the times
of day when outdoor levels are lowest, generally the afternoon rather than early morning or
evening, when cooler stiller air holds pollution near ground level.

The Window-Sill Test
Before spending anything, run this. It takes a week and tells you which problem you
have.
- Wipe a window sill — ideally one facing a road — completely clean, and note the day.
- Wipe an interior surface far from any window equally clean.
- Leave both a week, then compare.
If the sill is dramatically dirtier, particularly with dark or black
deposit, your dust is arriving from outside and sealing is your first move. Black
deposit specifically suggests combustion soot from traffic or burning.
If both are similar, your dust is largely generated indoors — textiles,
cooking and occupancy — and the internal fixes matter more than sealing.
Most Indian urban homes find the sill wins comfortably. That result is worth having before
you buy anything, because it decides whether an appliance or a roll of weather-stripping is the
better first purchase.
