What Actually Happened to Your Water

You installed a purifier, and the water tastes like nothing. Not bad — just empty, slightly
hollow, somehow less like water than what came out of the tap. It is one of the most common
post-purchase complaints in the category, and almost nobody explains it honestly at the point
of sale.

Here is what happened. Reverse osmosis forces water through a membrane fine enough to block
dissolved substances. That is exactly what makes it the only household technology capable of
removing heavy metals, nitrate, fluoride and high TDS — and it is also why it cannot be
selective
. The membrane does not distinguish arsenic from calcium. Both are dissolved.
Both are rejected.

The short version: flat taste is not a defect. It is what water tastes
like when nearly everything dissolved in it has been removed — which is precisely what you
bought the machine to do.

Why Demineralised Water Tastes Flat

Taste in water comes almost entirely from what is dissolved in it. Calcium and magnesium
contribute a faint sweetness and body. Bicarbonates soften the edges. Trace sodium adds a
roundness you would never identify individually but would immediately miss.

Strip all of that out and what remains is chemically excellent and sensorially empty. This
is why bottled mineral waters advertise their mineral analysis rather than their purity — the
minerals are the taste.

There is a second, subtler effect. Water with very low dissolved content is slightly more
aggressive at picking up flavours from whatever it touches — so if your purified water tastes
faintly of plastic, the storage tank or tubing may be contributing more than it would with
mineral-rich water.

Is Something Wrong With My Purifier?

Usually not. But three things are worth ruling out, because two of them are genuine
faults.

Check 1: Does your purifier have a mineral stage at all?

Many do. Some do not. If yours has no post-RO mineral cartridge, flat water is simply what
it produces, and no amount of servicing will change that.

Check 2: If it has one, has it ever been replaced?

A mineral cartridge is a consumable — the media dissolves into the water and is used up.
This is the most common cause of water that tasted fine at first and gradually went
flat.
An unreplaced mineral cartridge is an empty tube the water passes through.

Check 3: Is it a taste problem or an off-taste problem?

Flat is one thing. Metallic, plastic, musty or chemical is another — those point at the
tank, the tubing, or a filter that needed changing a long time ago, and they deserve a service
call rather than a mineral cartridge.

The Fix That Looks Cheap and Isn’t

This is the part worth reading carefully, because it is where the industry is least
forthcoming.

A TDS controller — sometimes called a blend valve — improves taste by routing a fraction of
the incoming water around the RO membrane and mixing it back into the purified output.
Your TDS meter reads higher. The water tastes better. Both of those are real.

But consider what is in the bypassed portion. It is your source water, untouched:
whatever nitrate, fluoride, heavy metals or hardness the membrane was installed to
remove is in that fraction
, and it is now in your glass. On a supply with mild TDS and
no chemical contamination, this is a reasonable engineering trade. On a borewell with high
fluoride or a supply with nitrate, it is not — and it is rarely explained that way when the
purifier is sold.

The question to ask your installer

“Is the TDS in my output water added after purification, or is
untreated water blended back in?” Those two produce a similar meter
reading and are not remotely the same water.

How to Tell Which One You Have

  • Look for a small adjustable valve on the tubing near the membrane
    housing, often with a screw or dial. That is typically a blend valve.
  • Look for a separate cartridge after the membrane, usually the last stage
    before the tank or tap. That is a mineral or alkaline stage.
  • Ask for the stage list in order. Any manufacturer should be able to tell
    you what each stage is and where it sits. Reluctance to answer is itself informative.

And if your input water is mild enough, it is worth asking whether you needed RO at all —
check your area’s readings before
assuming you did.

Does a TDS controller improve RO water taste?

It does, and that is exactly why it is worth understanding. A TDS controller works by letting a portion of unpurified water bypass the membrane and mix into the output. TDS rises, taste improves — and so does the concentration of whatever was in the source water. On a genuinely contaminated supply that is a meaningful compromise.

Should RO water have zero TDS?

No, and a reading near zero usually means the mineral stage is absent or exhausted. Most people find purified water tastes best somewhere in the region of 50–150 ppm. What matters is how the TDS got there — added back after purification, or bypassed around it.
