Two Different Questions
“Is my tap water safe?” is really two questions that need separating, because they have
different answers and different fixes.
- Is it microbiologically safe? Free of bacteria, viruses and parasites —
the things that make you ill within days. - Is it chemically safe? Free of arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, heavy metals —
the things that cause harm over years and give no warning at all.
Water can pass one and fail the other. Boiling handles the first and does nothing for the
second. This is the distinction most household decisions get wrong.
The honest national answer: there isn’t one. Safety varies by city, by
neighbourhood, by building, and by whether you are on municipal supply or a borewell. Anyone
answering this for all of India is not answering it for you.
What Happens Between Plant and Tap
Municipal water generally leaves treatment meeting standards. The interesting part is the
journey.
- Ageing distribution mains. Old pipes corrode, and joints leak — in both
directions. - Intermittent supply. This is the significant one and it is specific to how
water is delivered in much of India. When a main is not pressurised, the pressure gradient can
reverse, and contaminated groundwater around a leaking joint can be drawn into the
pipe. A continuously pressurised system pushes water out through a leak; an intermittent one
can pull it in. - Building storage tanks. Covered below, and usually the weakest link.
- Internal plumbing. Old galvanised iron contributes rust; some older
fittings contribute metals.
So the water quality report for your city describes water at the treatment works. It is a
starting point, not a description of what reaches your glass.
Your Tank Is Probably the Weak Point
Most Indian homes store water, and the storage tank is the most neglected part of the entire
system.
What accumulates in an unmaintained tank: sediment on the floor, biofilm on the walls, and —
where the cover is missing, cracked or ill-fitting — dust, insects, lizards and bird droppings.
Sunlight reaching the water encourages algae.
The practical implications:
- Clean it roughly every six months, more often on an intermittent or
tanker-fed supply - Check the cover seals properly, and that no light gets in
- Check the overflow and vent are screened against insects
- Look inside once. Most people never have, and it is frequently the most
informative thing they do about their water all year
If a household has recurring stomach trouble and the water tastes and looks fine,
the storage tank is the first place to look — before buying any appliance. A
purifier downstream of a contaminated tank is treating water that should not be in that
condition.
If You’re on Borewell Water
Borewell water bypasses municipal treatment entirely. Whatever is in the aquifer arrives at
your tap unaltered, and it should not be assumed safe because it looks clear or has always been
used.
Common issues, none of which are visible:
- High TDS and hardness, widespread across much of India
- Fluoride, elevated in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra
Pradesh and Karnataka - Arsenic, a serious problem in parts of West Bengal, Bihar, UP and
Assam - Nitrate, from agricultural runoff, and specifically dangerous for
infants - Iron and manganese, staining and unpleasant rather than acutely
hazardous
Borewell water needs testing, not judgement by appearance. It is the single
strongest case for an actual laboratory analysis rather than a meter reading.

One clarification worth having, because it causes constant confusion: a TDS meter
does not measure safety. It measures how much is dissolved, not what. Water at 400 ppm
of calcium and magnesium is hard and fine; water at 150 ppm with arsenic in it is dangerous. A
low reading is not a clean bill of health.
The Contaminants You Can’t Detect
The single most important thing on this page:
- Arsenic — colourless, odourless, tasteless. Causes serious long-term
harm. - Fluoride — undetectable by taste. Causes dental and skeletal fluorosis
over years. - Nitrate — undetectable. Particularly dangerous for infants.
- Lead — undetectable, and specifically harmful to children’s
development. - Bacteria and viruses — invisible in clear water.
Every one of these gives no sensory warning whatsoever. “It tastes fine” is not evidence about
any of them, and that is precisely why area-level data and testing matter more than judgement.
Recurring Stomach Trouble
If people in the household repeatedly have gastrointestinal illness, work through this in
order:
- See a doctor first. Recurrent infection needs diagnosis — there are causes
that have nothing to do with water, and some that need treatment. - Check the tank. Look inside. Have it cleaned. This is the most common
fixable cause. - Test for microbiological contamination, specifically.
- Check the purifier if you have one. An overdue filter, or a UV lamp that
has failed silently, means you have been drinking untreated water while believing otherwise. - Consider other routes. Ice, food washing, and eating out are all
plausible, and water is not automatically the cause simply because it is the easiest thing to
blame.
What to Do About It
Match the treatment to what you actually have, rather than buying the most capable device
available:
- Microbiological risk only, low TDS — UV, or UV with UF. RO is unnecessary
and strips minerals for no benefit. - High TDS, salty taste, chemical contaminants — RO is required. Nothing
else removes dissolved solids. - Both — RO with UV, which is why the combination is standard across most
of India. - Hardness at every tap — a softener on the main line, separately. A
purifier does not address bathing or laundry. - Tank problems — clean and cover the tank. No appliance substitutes for
this.
The order matters. Find out what is in your water, then buy the thing that removes it.
